Some monumental historical moments occurred on the basketball court this weekend when LeBron James surpassed 40,000 career points in the NBA and Caitlin Clark broke the all-time career scoring record at the college level.

James has been the NBA’s all-time leading scorer for a little while now and just became the first player ever to reach the 40,000-point threshold. Meanwhile, Clark passed Pete Maravich for the all-time college hoops scoring record this past Sunday in her Iowa team’s win over Ohio State.

Following James’ and Clark’s accomplishments, college hoops insider Jay Bilas was asked during his appearance on the Dan Patrick Show to break down which feat is more impressive. But Bilas wasn’t a fan of having to pick between the two basketball icons.

“Wow. I don’t — that’s a difficult comparison,” said Bilas. “They’re both amazing, and that kind of brings up an interesting point — almost our need to go away from celebrating the accomplishment and then, you know, try to put it in a different context.

“Like, when Tiger Woods wins the Masters, we don’t say, ‘who’s better, Tiger or Jack (Nicklaus)?’ when he’s getting the Green Jacket put on him. But we seem to do that for some reason.”

Without offering a real answer to the question he was initially asked, Bilas explained that Caitlin Clark is a generational talent, regardless of how her accomplishments stack up with those of LeBron James.

“Now, I don’t know what the greater accomplishment was. All I know, Dan, is Caitlyn Clark is a supernova the likes of which we’ve never seen, certainly in women’s basketball, and arguably in college basketball period. And it has been amazing to see her fill all these arenas and to play the way she plays, to play with that kind of joy, which I think is an additive to just her scoring.”

Obviously, though, Clark is much more than just a scorer. In fact, while breaking down her greatness, Bilas made sure to point out that the passing element is part of Clark’s game that must be highlighted.

“Then, one thing that gets overlooked a little bit, maybe not by some of the basketball experts that cover games, but she’s an extraordinary passer. There’s no other scorer that I know of on that list of the greatest scorers in women’s basketball and even men’s that is as high up on the assist level as she is. I mean, she’s a magnificent passer in addition to being an unbelievable scorer.”

As a matter of fact, Caitlin Clark is the nation’s leader in points per game as well as assists per game when it comes to women’s hoops.
