Caitlin Clark on NCAA scoring record

Thursday night, Caitlin Clark did what many were expecting. With her eighth point against Michigan, she moved up to No. 1 on the NCAA’s all-time scoring list, and she doubled down by setting an Iowa single-game record as well.

The performance moved Clark past Kelsey Plum on the all-time list. The former Washington star set the scoring record in 2017 before becoming a back-to-back WNBA champion with the Las Vegas Aces, and she previously expressed her excitement for Clark to surpass her.

Friday night, while sitting courtside at the NBA Celebrity All-Star game, Plum acknowledged the fashion in which Clark set the record.

“She’s incredible,” Plum said. “I mean, especially, too, the exact shot that she broke it. I think that pretty much sums it up, right? Just pulling up from basically half court.

“But I love it. It’s so good for the game. It’s really cool to just see somebody not be afraid of the moment. Just excited for her.”

Kelsey Plum: ‘If I’m Iowa, I’m gonna throw the kitchen sink’ at Caitlin Clark for another year

Of course, after the season, Clark has a decision to make. She still has the COVID-19 year to use if she wants it, giving her the option to return to Iowa for one final season. Hawkeye fans made their thoughts quite clear after Thursday’s game as they broke into “One More Year” chants while Clark did a postgame interview with ESPN’s Holly Rowe.

Plum didn’t make a prediction for what Clark would do, but she knows what she would do if she was calling the shots in Iowa City.

“Who knows? Everyone’s trying to figure out if she’s coming out or she’s staying put,” Plum said. “If I’m Iowa, I’m gonna throw the kitchen sink at her, for sure.”

Plum was along the lengthy list of congratulations Clark received after moving into the No. 1 spot on the NCAA’s all-time scoring list. Iowa held a postgame celebration for her, featuring congratulatory messages from friends and family in a video. Nike also paid tribute as part of their relationship through an NIL deal.

Clark soaked in every moment as the celebration began.

“It’s pretty unreal,” Clark told Peacock’s Caroline Pineda after the game. “This crowd’s unreal. I’m just really grateful, honestly, to be able to be here and make so many of my dreams come true with so many amazing people that have supported me – whether it’s my coaches, my teammates, my family. I’m just filled with a lot of gratitude.”
