Iowa football has just recently lost one of its former players. The school announced on Tuesday morning that 23-year-old Cody Ince passed away. Iowa did not say when he passed or what the cause of death was, but did provide the following statement from head coach Kirk Ferentz.

You can see the post and statement right here or read Ferentz’ comments just below:

“I am incredibly sad to hear about Cody Ince’s sudden passing. Cody was a tremendous young man, valued teammate, and contributor to our program. He loved football, fishing and hunting, and believed in the importance of family and friendships. Cody was just beginning this next chapter of his life and was about to be married. Mary and I are heartbroken for his fiancée, his family and all his friends who knew and loved him. All of us in the football program – his coaches and teammates – are mourning his loss.”

A very sad day for the Hawkeye community.

Ince had just left the program following the 2022 season after a successful but injury-riddled career on the field. During the COVID-shortened 2020 season, Ince earned a spot on the honorable mention list for All-Big Ten and was a steady blocker whenever he did get the chance to play.

But after his standard college career and a slew of injuries, Ince decided to not to take his extra season and instead ended his time with the Hawkeyes. Just a few months later, he’s now passed away.

According to a report from The Gazette, Ince died over this past weekend, but they reported that even the obituary had not yet specified the cause of death. No matter how it happened, it’s tragic to see such a young get fresh out of college lose his life. Again, a very sad day in the University of Iowa community.

Here was the info provided from The Gazette’s report:

“Former Iowa offensive lineman Cody Ince died suddenly over the weekend, a team spokesman confirmed Tuesday morning. Ince was 23. The initial obituary and Iowa’s news release did not identify the cause of death. Visitation and a celebration-of-life service will be held Saturday in Amery, Wis. — near his hometown of Luck, Wis. His obituary asks, in lieu of flowers, for donations in Ince’s name to the University of Iowa’s Stead Family Children’s Hospital.”

Rest In Peace to Cody Ince, gone too soon just after his time with the Hawkeyes.
