The Iowa Hawkeyes are laying it on thick against Maryland. Up 34-7, quarterback Spencer Petras found his running back Tyler Goodson out the backfield for a crossing route for the score.

On a second-and-22, the Hawkeye coaches called the play to help gain some of their lost yardage back. Little did they know that Goodson had a house call to make. As he beats the linebacker to the inside, he makes the catch inside with the defender trailing.

With no one directly in front of him, he swiftly make his way to the secondary level. Once there, he is met by the safety and promptly shakes him out of his cleats without being touched. After passing him it’s a foot race to the end zone, which he wins for the touchdown.

In a game that was supposed to feature two of the better teams in the Big Ten this season, it has been anything but that.

Iowa domination

Iowa has dominated the game from the start and has stifled the Terrapins offense. The Hawkeye defense has held Maryland to just 14 point. They have also forced multiple turnovers — one fumble and four interceptions. Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa has looked nothing like his previous self in this game. He entered the game with over 1,300 yards passing on the season, and a 10-1 touchdown to interception ratio. But after this game, all of that is no more.

On offense, the Hawkeyes have been methodical in the way they have moved the ball down the field. Petras has been exceptional in his orchestration of the offense. He is 21 of 30 for 259 yards through the air. He’s also responsible for five of the six touchdowns scored by the Hawkeyes. Petras currently has the unique stat line of four carries for -15 yards and two touchdowns.

Barring an improbable comeback, they should cruise to another victory over another solid opponent this week. Up next for them will be the toughest challenge of this season. They will face No. 4 Penn State at home next Saturday.

If Penn State can take care of business this Saturday against an Indiana team that the Hawkeyes have already demolished, it will set up a meeting between two top-five Big Ten schools next weekend.
