The Iowa State Cyclones were dealt an upset loss in Athens, Ohio on Saturday to the Ohio Bobcats. The Bobcats prevailed 10-7, thanks to some stellar play from their defense. Following the tough loss, an Iowa State fan in attendance in Peden Stadium let Cyclones’ head coach Matt Campbell know he wasn’t happy.

While they were heading into the locker room, an Iowa State fan yelled, “Hey Campbell, what are you doing? You’re on the hot seat. You’re on the hot seat.”

Campbell heard it and wasn’t happy and had to be held back by the police officer escorting the team to the locker room.

Check out the confrontation here.

Ohio defensive lineman Rodney Matthews picked off a deflected pass late in the fourth quarter to preserve the 10-7 upset win for the Bobcats. On the first play of the drive, Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht’s pass was broken up by Bobcat corner Roman Parodie, and the ball landed in the arms of Matthews to bring home a huge victory for Ohio.

Ohio linebacker Bryce Houston led his team with 15 tackles. It was the Bobcats’ first win over a Power Five team since 2017, when they beat the Kansas Jayhawks 42-30.

Iowa State kicker Chase Contreraz missed field goals in the second and fourth quarters, which proved to be costly in the end. But it’s important to note that one of those field goals was a highly controversial miss in the fourth quarter, which clearly appeared to go inside the uprights on the replay. Officials missed the call and signaled no good. Those three points would prove to be the difference in the end.

Ohio quarterback Kurtis Rourke completed 16 of 32 passes for 135 yards, while tossing one touchdown and no interceptions. He also had seven carries for 58 rushing yards.

Last year, Rourke completed 69.1 percent of his passes for 3,256 yards, while tossing in 25 touchdowns and just four interceptions. After his big season, he brought home first team All-MAC honors and MAC Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2022.

The Bobcats lost their first game to San Diego State, 20-13, but they rebounded the past two weeks with wins over Florida Atlantic and Iowa State. The defeated the FAU Owls 17-10 and on Saturday, came away with a hard fought 10-7 win over the Cyclones.

Iowa State has now fallen to 1-2 overall on the 2023 season. They lost to their bitter rivals, the Iowa Hawkeyes, 20-13. And then they lost to the Ohio Bobcats, 10-7. They throttled Northern Iowa in their first game, 30-9.

Next up, the Cyclones will face an Oklahoma State team that was just whooped at home, 33-7, by the South Alabama Jaguars.

Next up for Ohio, they’ll face off against the Bowling Green Falcons, who lost on Saturday to the Michigan Wolverines.
