Kentucky star Maddie Scherr has played her last game with the Wildcats. Scherr announced on Instagram Thursday morning that she is moving on from the Kentucky program.

Scherr averaged 12.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game this past season.

“Bluegrass girl for life! I’m so thankful for the opportunity to play for my home state with such an amazing community of support behind me. I have loved being part of this program and am forever grateful for the relationships and memories made. I do not take for granted any moment I got to wear Kentucky on the front of my jersey,” Maddie Scherr posted.

“With that being said, I’m closing the chapter on my time at Kentucky. Thank you again to all the fans and people who have helped me along the way. Stay tuned for another announcement here soon :)”

Maddie Scherr signed with Kentucky as a five-star recruit in the class of 2020. The Kentucky native was named the Gatorade State Player of the Year in each of her final two seasons of high school basketball.

Scherr signed with Oregon out of high school and played two seasons with the Ducks. During her time at Oregon, she appeared in 53 games, making 32 starts.

She averaged 3.7 points, 2.6 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game across those two years.

Scherr then returned to her home state of Kentucky to play for the Wildcats. During her first season in Lexington in 2022-23, she played and started in 29 games, averaging 11.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2.1 steals per game.

This past season she had another excellent year for Kentucky, despite missing six games due to injuries.

UK Women’s Basketball lands commitment from North Carolina transfer Teonni Key

Kentucky may be losing Maddie Scherr to the transfer portal, but the Wildcats are also bringing in some talent out of the portal.

According to Kentucky Sports Radio’s women’s hoops beat reporter, Phoenix Stevens, Kentucky has landed a commitment from Teonni Key, who spent the last three years at North Carolina before hitting the portal.

Key is a former five-star recruit.

Key’s true freshman season was marred by a torn ACL and she never made it on the court. She did recover as a sophomore in 2022-23 and played in 28 games for an average of 10 minutes a night, scoring two points and grabbing two rebounds per game in the process. Those numbers were similar again this season and now she’ll look for a larger role with Kenny Brooks’ first team in Lexington.
