Kentucky star Jacob Toppin reveals how he has grown physically during the offseason
After announcing his return to Kentucky for a senior season, Jacob Toppin met with media to discuss what he looks forward to improving in his third year with the program. According to him, a big part of his development is getting himself right physically.
Toppin revealed during his press conference that he’s gained 5-10 pounds since the season ended. Growth he credits to an improved diet.
“Since the season ended, I gained about 5-10 pounds, which is good. The new strength coach, Brady Welch, he’s been good for us. He’s been on me a lot about eating the right stuff. Not just eating a lot of food but eating the right stuff, and it’s helped a lot. I feel healthier, I feel better, I feel stronger. So it’s definitely been a process.”
One reporter asked what Toppin meant by getting “the right stuff” into his body.
“Eating a lot of protein and carbs. Not a lot of junk food. Make sure I’m hydrating, drinking a lot of water. Also drinking a lot of gatorade because the sugars I need. So stuff like that.”
Then he was asked what “the wrong stuff” was that he had been eating.
“I ate a lot of junk food, which was like chips, candy. When my nutritionist was like, ‘whenever you’re hungry, have a snack’…I thought a snack was like a bag of chips or cookies or something. Not like PB&J. So now, when I’m hungry I would eat like a peanut butter and Nutella sandwich with a banana or a protein shake.”
KSR’s own Drew Franklin followed those comments up by asking which candy Toppin misses the most. To which he responded that he may or may not sneak in a candy bar or two on occasion.
“To be honest I squeeze candy in there every once in a while. I didn’t get rid of candy the whole time because I’m a candy person. I love candy, so starburst is definitely my favorite candy.”
If Toppin has revolutionized most of his diet to put on extra pounds of muscle, surely a couplet of starburst every once in a while won’t hurt too bad. After all, DK Metcalf has said he eats several bags of skittles a day, and that dude has one of the most ridiculous bodies in all of sports.
Overall, Jacob Toppin focused on eating right and adding weight this offseason. Should be in for a fantastic senior season.
