When news broke late last week that Kentucky star quarterback Will Levis was questionable against South Carolina, redshirt freshman Kaiya Sheron‘s number was called. After losing 24-14 to the Gamecocks at home, Sheron’s supporting cast never gave him a chance to have any success.

Big Blue Nation can debate about what could have happened with Levis under center against South Carolina, but at this point, fans are desperate to have their QB1 back in time for the Mississippi State matchup this weekend. Head coach Mark Stoops gave a brief update following the loss about Levis’ status over the next few days.

“I’m not sure. You know, I really don’t. It’s been day-to-day and it’s day-to-day,” Stoops said postgame. “So I can’t tell you how that’s going to respond.”

Without Levis, Kentucky’s top three playmakers out wide – Tayvion Robinson, Dane Key and Barion Brown – combined for five receptions for 55 yards on the day. Sheron went on to finish the game 15-of-27 passing for 178 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

Sheron also took five sacks during the game. South Carolina had four on the season heading into the matchup.

“He did some good things when he had time, I thought, when we put him in a position to be successful. I don’t think we played very good around him,” Stoops said of Sheron. “… I thought we played as poorly as we have all year at certain positions around a first-time starter. And I don’t think that’s right for that young man. And there’s things that he did very well. And there’s areas where we didn’t do a good enough job around him.”

With or without Levis, Kentucky is set to host No. 23 Mississippi State this Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET live on the SEC Network.
