Mark Stoops previews Spencer Rattler, South Carolina offense

South Carolina hasn’t won in Lexington in a decade. Given the start to each team’s season this fall, the Gamecocks are big underdogs to end that streak. However, Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops won’t overlook Shane Beamer’s squad, especially on the offensive end, as they’re coming off back-to-back 50-point outings. Against fairly limp competition, but nonetheless, the offense finally had some spark the last few weeks.

In particular, the Gamecocks got much better performances out of their quarterback and running back combination. At his press conference previewing the game, Stoops was asked about South Carolina QB Spencer Rattler and how he’d evaluate the Oklahoma import thus far this season. Here was his review:

“Very good player. Watched Spencer, obviously, for his time at OU and then the time at South Carolina. But, very talented quarterback. I like what they do with him. I like their offense. And, you know, creating some time off play-action. Very talented arm, can make all the throws and a very good player.”

Rattler’s start to the season was slow, but Stoops isn’t counting the former blue-chip recruit out after stronger performances as of late. He was also asked about the improving run game from the Gamecocks, to which he also had nothing but praise.

“Yeah I really think a lot of MarShawn Lloyd as well. I think he’s been a really good player. And I think they’re doing a good job of creating some movement up front. You know, really laying on some doubles getting some movement, getting him started. Because he’s such a talented back and he really just runs hard. He’s just a very good player, a complete player. Good in the pass game as well. So yeah, I mean, they’re doing a lot of things.”

So, two dynamic playmakers in that backfield, according to Mark Stoops. To end his recap of the South Carolina offense, he was asked if they look like a new offense this season with those two players compared to the system in place a year ago during Beamer’s first season.

“Are they different? I’m not sure. I mean, they’re getting in some empty. They still use some 11, some with 12 personnel. They do a nice job with their play-action passes on first second down to give them some time to get the ball down the field and create some space, taking some vertical shots. So, like everybody, they’re gonna put pressure on you.”

No bulletin board material from Mark Stoops. Just steady praise for a talented offense that’s still trying to find its footing in SEC play.
