Jager Burton commits costly, dirty personal foul vs. Georgia

Kentucky had a great opportunity ahead of itself on Saturday against Georgia. A win would put them in firm control of the SEC East and potentially travel to Atlanta for the first time in program history. Leaving Sanford Stadium with a win is no easy task though and it would take a near-perfect game.

Thus far, Kentucky has done nothing but shoot itself in the foot with penalties. Some of them have been mental mistakes, getting behind the chains due to a presnap penalty or holding. Others, such as this one from offensive lineman Jager Burton, could have been completely avoided.

A play in the first half was running to Kentucky’s right but the battle on the line of scrimmage was still going on. Burton was able to get a Georgia defensive lineman to the ground and should have let it be, especially being so far away from the ball.

Instead, he decided to fall on the opposing player and potentially with some intent. Burton landed right on the back of the Georgia defender and thankfully missed the head.

The officials did see the moment occur, flagging Burton and giving Kentucky a 15-yard personal foul call. Just another one of the mistakes piling on early for them the road. Not exactly what you want to cook up when facing Georgia in general — let alone in their own stadium.

Even ESPN’s Sean McDonough could not believe what Burton did. He called the move “stupid” and pointed how how much the offensive lineman cost his team.

“Burton has really hurt his team here in the first quarter,” McDonough said. “That last one was about as stupid as it gets.”

Burton is not the only person to have these kinds of penalties. Defensive lineman Deone Walker committed a personal foul after a play too, hitting a Georgia player. Sure, Kentucky might have been running the ball back in case of a fumble but the officials had blown the ball dead.

So in totality, everybody wearing a white jersey has lost their head for a moment or two. Extra life has been given to Georgia at times when they are not really in need of it. Things will need to change quickly before the Bulldogs find a way to get the game out of hand — something you know they have the capability to do.
