Two years ago, Jermayne Lole played a major role on the Arizona State defense before missing the 2021 season with an injury. In Week 1 at Louisville, he suffered another injury — and will reportedly miss the rest of this year, as well.

Lole suffered an elbow injury against Syracuse and will miss not only the UCF game Friday night, but the entire 2022 season, according to Cardinal Authority’s Jody Demling. He transferred to Louisville from Arizona State over the offseason as one of 11 transfer portal additions by Scott Satterfield during the 2021-22 cycle.

Against Syracuse, Lole didn’t register anything in the box score. During the 2020 season at ASU, he totaled 24 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks in four games for the Sun Devils. After entering the portal, he came in as the No. 3-ranked defensive lineman to enter the portal, according to the 2021 On3 Transfer Portal Rankings.

It’s tough news for Louisville, which is gearing up to take on UCF Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

Greg McElroy: Louisville defensive line needs to prove itself in 2022

Before the season got underway, ESPN analyst Greg McElroy said he believes the Cardinals defensive line will also need some of their more unproven talent to step up in order to be successful. McElroy believes Lole was their biggest offseason pickup that could really help Louisville up front, and that Ashton Gillotte, and Yaya Diaby could also be key contributors this season up front.

“Right now when you look at Louisville over the last few years they are probably one of the most underwhelming groups that the Louisville roster has had. They’ve had good talent, they’ve recruited pretty well, they’ve had some nice pieces. You think about great Louisville defenses in the past, they had guys that could get after you at quarterback,” McElroy said.
