Brian Kelly not concerned about possibly losing Matt House

Brian Kelly has enjoyed a surprising amount of success in his first season at LSU. That success is attributed to his balance between his offense and defense. And with that being the case, it is likely that Kelly’s offensive and defensive coordinators would receive opportunities at other locations. As it stands right now, some believe that defensive coordinator Matt House would be the likely candidate to exit LSU for a head coach position elsewhere. And if that were to be the case, would Kelly stand in the way?

“No. If Matt House gets an opportunity where he thinks he’s going to be better for it, I will help him in any way possible,” said Kelly. “I think that’s part of this profession. He’s done an outstanding job. I don’t know if Matt House came here to be the defensive coordinator for a year. He’s going to have to run through his family and his wife. I think they like it here. But that’s up to Matt. I would never be in the way of any of our coaches if they have an opportunity to move on to be a head coach. I would fully support them.”

Kelly’s initial goal for year one at LSU was to bring about a change in culture, getting the players from the previous coaching regime to buy into his new leadership style. And so far, he has been successful early on as LSU currently has a 9-2 record and has already secured a spot in the SEC championship game.

House’s job coaching the defense has helped the Tigers limit and even stop some of the best offenses in the SEC. So a head coaching opportunity could be in House’s future. Whether he accepts one now or later remains unknown. But what he can know for certain is that Kelly will not stand in the way of his success.
