To open the season, there were serious concerns surrounding LSU star Kayshon Boutte. The NFL-level wide receiver was invisible on the field during the Tiger’s first five weeks of the season. That has all shifted, though, as he has been a more integral part of the offense that has found success over the last several weeks.

Brian Kelly opened up on Boutte’s improvement over the course of LSU’s season during media after this weekend’s win over Ole Miss. He believes Boutte’s level of comfort has had a lot to do with his improved presence both on the field and in the locker room.

“I think he’s feeling comfortable with his role and his leadership role. He’s been outstanding…I couldn’t find (him) the first week and now he’s running the show,” said Kelly.

Boutte missed LSU’s win over New Mexico for the birth of his child. So, besides that, he accumulated just 11 catches for 97 yards over his first four games of the season. He wasn’t playing at the same level as those in Baton Rouge were accustomed to but Boutte’s been much better over his last three. In a 2-1 stretch for the team, he has 16 catches for 191 yards and a touchdown.

Even with the ebbs and flows of his season, Boutte’s engagement has never shifted according to Kelly. That’s what he’s happiest about, even though Boutte has once again proven his explosive ability on the field.

“That’s what I love about him. He’s been so engaged, so part of what we’re doing. And we’re better because of it,” Kelly said. “You can see when he touches the football, he’s electric. And we’re here because our best players are playing their best football.”

As Boutte has improved, so has LSU. Now that their strongest weapon has a better feel for his season, the Tigers will be better off down the stretch in their final four games. That will start in two weeks when LSU comes out of their bye to face Alabama.
