The LSU Tigers will be without one of their most ferocious players this weekend. According to Ed Orgeron, defensive end Ali Gaye will be out for Saturday’s game against Central Michigan.

“Ali (Gaye) is a tremendous pass rusher. He is unavailable,” Orgeron said Wednesday on the SEC coaches teleconference. “He was unavailable last week, he’s going to be unavailable this week. But what I’ve seen from him is he’s continued to grow and I think he’s going to be an outstanding end for us.”

Additionally, one of the best defensive backs in the nation won’t be available. Orgeron continued with the bad news, stating that safety Jay Ward is doubtful to play as well.

“Hopefully we’ll have him by next week,” said Orgeron. “It’s day-by-day right now. He’s very doubtful for this week, probably (for) Mississippi State, but not sure yet.”

While the Tigers got off to a tough start with a loss against the UCLA Bruins, their hopes take another huge hit if Gaye and Ward miss an extended period of time. While Central Michigan may not be able to make it hurt, their rigorous SEC schedule could.

So far this season, LSU has been snakebitten by injuries and availability issues. If their luck doesn’t turn, it could continue to derail their season.

Availability issues plaguing LSU

Ed Orgeron’s announcement today is the latest in a long line of availability issues for LSU. Earlier this week, the Tigers lost running back John Emery for the season.

“John Emery is out the year,” Orgeron said to reporters on Monday. “He’s unavailable. I do believe Armoni Goodwin is questionable for this week. And that’s a shame because I think he’s an outstanding running back. ‘Tre Bradford, as far as I know, will be eligible for the game. We’ll have to see how the week goes, and hopefully we can play him this week.”

The LSU running back room is taking a hit with the losses of Emery and Armoni Goodwin. However, the return of Tre Bradford couldn’t come at a better time.

Additionally, Orgeron provided an update on the injuries that have plagued his offensive line.

“I expect to get Chasen Hines back for sure,” Orgeron told reporters on Monday. “Austin Deculus, maybe. We’ll just have to see how the week goes on. And Cam Wire is out for the game.”

If LSU is to reach their potential in 2021, they’re going to need to get healthier. As the season goes on, hopefully Orgeron and the Tigers can get some reinforcements back.
