Ahead of a game with huge implications, Ed Orgeron evaluated the LSU secondary heading into their matchup with the Auburn Tigers. With Derek Stingley Jr. out for the game, Orgeron focused on players like Jay Ward, Dwight McGlothern and Eli Ricks.

First, Orgeron heaped praise on McGlothern. In Stingley’s stead, the sophomore from Houston, Texas has filled-in admirably.

“Really pleased with the play of Dwight [McGlothern]. I think the guys answered the bell,” stated Orgeron. “You know, he’s come back from an injury that most guys would have been out for at least another month. He worked very hard and came back and played very well. Made very few mistakes.”

Moreover, Orgeron couldn’t speak highly about his secondary without mentioning Ward. Additionally, he mentioned he was pleased with Cordell Flott and Eli Ricks.

“I’m really pleased obviously with Cordell [Flott] and having Jay Ward back is helping us out. So, I think those guys are playing really well,” said Orgeron. “I think that you got a guy like Eli Ricks — he hasn’t played his best game yet but he does some really good stuff. But he’s got some improvement to make.”

Evidently, LSU is going to need their secondary to step up once again — no matter who is behind center for the Auburn Tigers.

Orgeron on how LSU will stop Auburn

Furthermore, Orgeron got into what it’s going to take for LSU to defeat Auburn tonight. Evidently, his focus isn’t mainly on the team’s secondary, but they’ll still play a pivotal role.

“We’re gonna have to tackle, we’re going to have to cover those guys man-to-man. There’s going to be a lot of singled-up on their receivers. We’ve got to covert them, and we’ve got to pass rush,” stated Orgeron. “We’ll get a chance, but the object of the game is to stop the run and tackle.”

Since their rough performance in Week 1 against UCLA, the LSU secondary has helped limit their opponents offense. However, their biggest test since their opening night loss takes place when Auburn comes to town.

If Ed Orgeron hopes to find recapture his past success as the LSU head coach, he’ll need his secondary to strut their stuff once again tonight.
