In the NFL world of free agency the news flies fast and ferocious, but one bit of news last week stopped the news cycle in its tracks. Former LSU tight end and NFL free agent Foster Moreau revealed he has cancer.

He was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in a routine physical conducted by the New Orleans Saints.

Moreau shared the news on social media, as well as his intent to fight with everything he’s got to beat his cancer diagnosis.

He recently joined Adam Schefter‘s podcast to further discuss the diagnosis, reiterating his positive outlook.

“I tend to play the percentages, and I’ve beaten a lot of odds in my life,” Moreau said. “If I could beat those odds I would have loved to, but I’ve also kicked a lot of ass. If I couldn’t beat the odds then I just have to deal with it.”

With four seasons in the NFL, Moreau had just wrapped up his most productive campaign, positioning himself perfectly heading into the free agency period.

Instead, Foster Moreau will step away from the game to battle cancer.

Moreau logged 33 catches for 420 yards and two touchdowns in 2022 with the Las Vegas Raiders, providing a consistent and reliable threat. In four years he has totaled 91 catches for 1,107 yards and 12 touchdowns.

So having to immediately stop after finding a groove in the NFL likely wasn’t easy.

“It was hard and it was scary. Every day passes and it seems to ease up on my mind a little bit,” Moreau said. “By the time that first chemotherapy session starts it’ll be like Sunday morning waking up and getting ready to kick someone’s ass.”

Moreau certainly has a lot of support behind him, not the least of which comes from his collegiate background at LSU. Head coach Brian Kelly was among those to offer support and well-wishes to Moreau.

He was a high-caliber tight end for the Tigers before entering the NFL.

Moreau played four seasons with the Tigers before being selected by the Raiders with the 137th-overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft. His senior season, he started the year on the John Mackey Award watchlist — the award given to college football’s most outstanding tight end yearly. He finished his last season with the team catching 22 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns.

Moreau’s final two years at LSU saw him haul in 46 receptions total for over 500 receiving yards and five touchdowns. He left the Tigers as the seventh-ranked player in school history for receptions by a tight end with 52. The Louisiana native also finished in a tie for fourth in touchdowns by a tight end in school history with six.

Now Foster Moreau will be fighting against cancer, a different type of opponent, but if his attitude is any indication, he’ll be just as successful as he has been on the gridiron.
