LSU came in with an offer late in February. In April, Brian Kelly and his staff got Jeremiah Hughes on campus for the first time. After an official visit to Baton Rouge in June, the versatile athlete out of Las Vegas Bishop Gorman knew he wanted to play at LSU.

“It was a very tough decision being from Arkansas, but LSU is a great school, I felt wanted, and I chose them,” Hughes told On3.

Growing up in Arkansas, Hughes had his eye on the Razorbacks. He still has family there. As a kid watching the home-state school play helped put LSU on his radar.

Now his plan is to be part of LSU’s future in the secondary.

“Watching LSU play against Arkansas growing up showed me a lot. I learned about LSU, it became my dream school, and I am going to DBU.

“If you want to be that guy on the next level, and you play defensive back, then you go to LSU. They develop players, Baton Rouge is one big family, everyone loves each other, and I love it. The support around LSU is great and I can’t wait to be a part of it.”

The new staff at LSU has impressed Hughes

Brian Kelly leads the way as the head coach, and he is someone Hughes and his family is fond of. Lets start with Robert Peeples though, the defensive backs coach that recruited the three-star out of one of the top high school programs in the country.

“As soon as I met coach Steeples, I knew he was a down-to-earth guy that wants the best for me,” Hughes said. “I like him, his style, and his ability to coach a lot.

“He is a coach that does what he teaches himself. That means a lot to me. That is the best way I learn. Coach Steeples practices what he preaches. I love that about him. He is a coach that wants to connect with his players so he can learn how they learn best. Then he wants to teach them. He was a big part of my decision.”

Coach Kelly played his role too. With both Hughes and his family.

“My parents felt comfortable dropping me off at LSU because they felt so comfortable with the staff. Coach Kelly welcomed me and my parent with open arms and we had some great conversations.

“He is a great coach that knows what he is doing. He wants the best for his players on and off the field.

“Coach Kelly wants his players to graduate as champions. He wants his players to practice hard, work hard as a student, win games, and graduate. That was big for me and my parents.”

Hughes is eager to learn from Kelly, Steeples, and the staff in Baton Rouge. He is already coached by a top high school staff and he will go into LSU with one goal in mind.

“I want to be great. It will be straight business for me at LSU. I want to be one of the next greats coming out of there at defensive back. My goal is to be in the category with Patrick Peterson, Tyrann Mathieu, Laron Landry, and the other greats that played there. That is all I am thinking about.”
