LSU Football: Mike Denbrock pleased with early progress on offense

The LSU offense is trying to get back where it was under Joe Burrow and company. Granted, that group very well may be the greatest collective offensive unit in college football history. But even still, the standard in the two years since that ’20 title run is subpar. Under Brian Kelly and his new offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, the Tigers are hoping for a return to glory.

At a recent press conference, Denbrock got the chance to discuss every aspect of his offense. Here was his opening statement, his State Of The Union for the LSU offense, if you will.

“Offensively, we are making really really good progress. Really happy, especially today. With kind of the stride that we made with our consistency and that’s really the battle at this time of year. Only five practices in, there aren’t a whole lot of answers yet. But you can see things starting to kind of take shape a little bit.”

Denbrock continued, emphasizing the importance of consistent effort for LSU.

“As to, you know, the positive direction that this group as a unit is going — we continue to coach and demand their maximum effort at all times on the football field. And that, for the most part, they’ve given us that. I think it’s it’s a learned skill. I don’t think you inherently are just always a football player that knows how to play hard — or the type of grit that it takes to be successful at what you’re doing. Sometimes, you have to be shown and taught and continue as a skill that gets developed over time. And we’ve gotten better and better at that.

“But we need to continue to build that. Really, what we’re trying to build with our unit as much as anything is the trust, love and respect amongst each other in that locker room. And what that leads to is a cohesion that’s unbreakable. We want to be unbreakable as an offensive unit. We want to be resilient when when times are tough. And we want to be resilient when times are good, so that we can kind of next-play-mentality ourselves into being the type of offense that we want to be. So there’s positive things going on.”

Lastly, Mike Denbrock ended with ambiguity, saying it’s really too early to tell what this offense is actually going to look like on the field.

“It’s too early to give you a whole lot of answers. Although I know you’re going to ask for them and that’s your job and that’s cool. But the reality of the situation is things are trending really well. I’m proud of the effort that the kids are given every day and I think we continue to make progress towards getting ready for game one.”
