The LSU Tigers football program refers to their success in producing great secondary defenders as “DBU.”

From Patrick Peterson to Tyrann Mathieu — just to name a few — it’s tough to debate the fact that LSU has produced a bevy of defensive backs that translated their success in college to the next level.

The next of those could be 6-foot-2 LSU sophomore cornerback, Dwight McGlothern, who got his opportunity due to the injury issues plaguing star defensive back Derek Stingley throughout the year.

Orgeron gave McGlothern the highest praise imaginable recently, who has filled in admirably for the future NFL star.

“I think Dwight is going to be one of the outstanding cornerbacks at LSU,” Orgeron said. “I think he has a chance to be a high draft pick.”

The former four-star recruit from Houston, Texas signed as the No. 20 cornerback and the No. 278 overall player in the country, according to 247Sports.

What has McGlothern brought to LSU?

While LSU fans were gutted when Stingley went down, McGlothern has been a revelation to say the least. He’s seen snaps in every contest this season, but his role has increased over the last five weeks.

In the back-and-forth showdown vs. Florida on Oct. 16, the sophomore had a breakthrough game when it mattered the most. He recorded four solo tackles, two key pass deflections and the biggest play of his career to date.

LSU held just an eight point edge as the third quarter began and the Florida offense began its drive with hopes of finding the end zone to tie the game. Instead, McGlothern read the eyes of the Gators’ quarterback, leaped in front of the receiver and recorded a 37-yard pick six which gave all the momentum to the LSU Tigers.

While his stats aren’t eye-popping, it’s clear opposing offensive coordinators are beginning to respect McGlothern’s game and calling plays away from him as much as possible. In eight games, the Texas native has 25 tackles. five pass deflections, a forced fumble and an interception.

It’s widely known Orgeron has strong ties with current NFL head coach Pete Carroll, who was behind the big-bodied, physical playmakers that were coined the “Legion of Boom” who held down the Seattle Seahawks’ secondary starting around 2010.

While McGlothern is just getting rolling with the LSU Tigers, Orgeron alluded the cornerback’s size and physicality would be a great fit for Carroll’s secondary room one day.

“The thing about Dwight is he’s a tall corner that can run,” the LSU front man said. “Coach [Pete] Carroll would love him. He’s tough and he wants to learn.”

In a season where there have been a ton of negative storylines, McGlothern has been a shining light that should give anyone supporting the LSU Tigers hope for the future.
