JD PicKell reveals where Myles Brennan stands in LSU quarterback competition
The LSU Tigers starting quarterback position is up for grabs still as a team begins to prepare for August, making their final preparations for the 2022 season. And On3’s JD PicKell explains what returning super senior Myles Brennan must do to win the starting quarterback spot and where he stands in the battle.
“First and foremost, you have Myles Brennan. Six-year senior; he’s gritty. He hasn’t been healthy his whole time at LSU, but he has stuck with this program. As an LSU fan, you feel for Miles Brennan because he’s the guy that has stuck with the ship no matter the condition and the biggest plus with him is he’s proven he can be successful when he’s healthy. He had 430 yards and four touchdowns against Missouri, but he’s had some bad luck as well, injury-wise.”
Before his injury, Brennan was engaged in a battle with Max Johnson for the starting quarterback job at LSU. Brennan also missed the majority of the 2020 season with a torn abdomen. Prior to his injury in 2020, Brennan was 79-of-131 for 11 touchdowns and three interceptions. He has thrown for 1,712 yards in his LSU career, which began in 2017.
“I mean, the kids shown he can play, shown he’s got some ability, but he just hasn’t been able to stay healthy. And so the risk with him is that obviously there’s the health concerns, but on top of that, of these three guys, he’s the least mobile. So what he would have to do is he’s gonna have to hang in there. Which, in principle, it’s easy but to do it in an SEC game, that’s a whole other beast. And oh, by the way, you have five new starters on your offensive line, so you’re probably going to have to hang in there a lot more than you would like.”
Brennan proved after the departure of Burrow that he had all the tools at his disposal to take over the reins as the Tigers’ signal caller. Unfortunately, injuries prevented that from happening before the previous two seasons ever got underway. If Myles Brennan can make it through the offseason healthy and win the starting quarterback position, the next question will likely be will he survive the year given his injury history. If he can, then Brian Kelly might fare better than anybody anticipated in his inaugural year coaching LSU.
