Not a lot of people expected LSU to win the SEC West in Brian Kelly’s first season as the team’s head coach. However, he clearly was ready for the job and was able to spark change. Linebacker Micah Baskerville explained what key things Kelly did to turn this team around.

While speaking to the media, Micah Baskerville was asked about those things in Kelly’s process that he’s found useful in some way.

“Okay, well, first I say doing the little things. He harps on that a lot because in every game there’s something you got to do. If you keep doing the little things, the routine plays, then we see it come out successful,” Micah Baskerville said.

“Another thing is our mental preparation. He’s big on our mental preparation. He feels that if we do have great mental preparation, we can play fast, play free and give all our effort without thinking. Those are some things that I see about his process that he talks about a lot that are very important.”

One of those activities that Brian Kelly has brought to LSU is a woman to help with the team’s mental health preparation.

“Yes, so he brings a lady in. And one thing that helps our mental preparation is just breathing, breathing, learning how to get to our optimal goal and how to — you know, not getting there too early. So that’s one thing,” Micah Baskerville said.

“Another thing is visualizing yourself making plays. He believes that if you see yourself there, it’s going to come to fruition.”

Brian Kelly on LSU’s year one growth

For Brian Kelly, this has been one of the great years of his career. He’s found it incredibly enjoyable and rewarding, as he explained, talking about year one growth following the team’s loss to Texas A&M.

“This is one of the most enjoyable years that I’ve had in my career. Watching these kids grow, this was not a step back,” Brian Kelly explained.

“This was a bump in the road where they’re gonna learn from it and understand how hard it is, each and every week in this league, and you have to be ready. Especially on the road and the talented team that came ready tonight to play and made plays. If we take care of the football late, who knows happens, but they fought. I mean, they kept fighting. But, yes. I would say that I’m really pleased with what our kids accomplished this year.”
