The Miami Hurricanes couldn’t be more excited about their uber-talented quarterback prospect they landed via the transfer portal this offseason, former Washington State signal-caller Cameron Ward. This spring, Ward has been busy adjusting to life with his new team, the Miami Hurricanes.

And on Saturday in the Hurricanes’ spring game, Ward threw his first touchdown pass with his new team, a strike to Isaiah Horton.

Cam Ward finished the game completing 17 of his 23 passes for 260 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the first half, showing why he was one of the most coveted quarterback prospects in the portal this offseason.

Head coach Mario Cristobal was impressed with his new star following the game. “I thought all the quarterbacks did some good things, but Cam, it’s obvious he’s a guy,” Cristobal said in the press release on the Hurricanes’ website.

Several other players shined in the Hurricanes’ spring game, including freshman defensive lineman Marquise Lightfoot, who tallied four tackles and a sack.

Lightfoot was rated as a five-star prospect in the On3 Industry Rankings for the 2024 cycle. He was rated as the No. 25 overall prospect in the nation, and showed why in the spring game. Tight end Elija Lofton was also another newcomer who impressed for the Canes on Saturday.

Veteran wideout Xavier Restrepo showed that he figures to be one of the team’s biggest stars yet again on offense. Last year, he delivered one of the best seasons by a wideout in Hurricane football history, hauling in 85 catches for 1,092 yards and six touchdowns.

Ward is used to change. He spent two seasons at Incarnate Word, an FCS program. While there Ward was selected to the FCS All-American Second Team, named Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year and was a Walter Payton Award Finalist, an honor given to the most outstanding offensive player in FCS Football.

After transferring to Washington State in 2022, Ward didn’t slow down. Ward tallied 3,735 passing yards this past season, the fifth-most in the country. He also tacked on 25 passing touchdowns and eight rushing scores while throwing just seven interceptions.

With spring drills now behind them, the Hurricanes will now turn their focus to preparing for their season opener on August 31st, a matchup with the Florida Gators. That one will be played in Gainesville in The Swamp.
