After a frustrating 2022 season, Miami hit the reset button on the offensive side of the ball. Offensive coordinator Josh Gattis was fired after only one season, being replaced by Shannon Dawson. According to wide receiver Jacolby George, at least, the move has worked.

As George explained, the offense is already proving to be more explosive than it was in previous years.

“I feel like this one is more explosive,” Jacolby George said. “More opportunities for the wide receivers to go up and get the ball, more deep balls, more just letting us be us.”

For Jacolby George, this is going to be his third offensive coordinator at Miami in as many seasons. Through this point, he’s played in 15 games and has 20 receptions for 313 yards and a touchdown.

New offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson is coming to Miami from Houston. There, he developed an explosive offensive scheme under head coach Dana Holgorsen. For head coach Mario Cristobal, he makes obvious sense as a fit for the Hurricanes.

“Shannon’s a stud. I mean, he was able to blend the principles of the Air Raid in the passing game and has really done a great job pounding the football. He was at West Virginia, his most recent time over at Houston. He’s an elite human being and he’s an elite teacher. And what he does really fits what we are looking for. We want to be an explosive offense and we want to be a physical offense,” Cristobal said.

“In South Florida, if you have an exciting, explosive offense, you’re gonna attract the best players from South Florida to play in this particular offense. And kind of like [new defensive coordinator] Lance Guidry, top five, top 10 in several categories and not by accident. He’s done it over a period of years. And again, it starts with being an elite human being and he’s a great connector, so the guys really enjoy being around him.”

Jacolby George on his goal for the spring game

For Jacolby George, there is a simple goal for the spring game. Just make sure that the receivers are working well together. Do that, and it should be a successful game for him and the rest of the unit.

“My goal is to make sure everybody’s doing good,” George said. “All the receivers, just make sure we’re all on the same page and we winning.”
