As spring ball continues, Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal gave an update about the development of backup quarterback Jacurri Brown.

Brown was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2022. As a freshman, he played in eight games for Miami. In those games, he threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns. A dual threat at the quarterback position, he ran for another 223 yards and even caught a pass for nine yards.

“This suits his style a little bit more because it’s just from a progression standpoint, from a learning standpoint, and then having a quarterback coach in the room, it all just makes sense,” Mario Cristobal said. “And so, he has progressed. Guy’s won a lot of ball games. You know, he’s played in a lot of big games.”

While Cristobal thinks that Brown is talented, he also needs all of his quarterbacks to be able to succeed within Miami’s system.

“And he knows how to play football and all we’ve got to do is make sure him and all the quarterbacks are systematic. You know?” Mario Cristobal explained. “That they’re playing within the system but without being a robot, and I think that’s what the system does best, and our players have enjoyed it because of that. There’s discipline but there’s also some wiggle room to be able to go and make plays, and he certainly has done a really good job with that.”

Of course, Jacurri Brown is still expected to be Tyler Van Dyke’s backup, though the two have a good relationship.

“Me and Tyler have been close,” Brown said. “It’s a love really relationship. I feel like I’ve learned that I don’t have to be Superman every play and just put the ball in play. Just play with touch, play with fun and just have fun out there. Don’t let the last way affect the next one.”

Jacurri Brown hopes to overcome stereotypes

Even as more black quarterbacks find success in the NFL, there are still stereotypes that black quarterbacks have to deal with. These are stereotypes that Jacurri Brown wants to find a way to overcome.

“Yeah, for sure. I feel like I’m; okay, let’s be real. I’m a black quarterback, right? So, they put those black quarterbacks in the box of athleticism,” Brown said.

“And I feel like if, let’s say if Cam Newton had the same mindset as Tom Brady, he’d still be playing in the league right now, even with his physique and everything like that. So I feel like if I expand on my mental part of the game, then I’ll be great forever.”
