Gary Ferman and JD PicKell Discuss the Success of Miami Early Into the 2023 Season

Miami cruised to an easy win over Bethune Cookman on Thursday night, 48-7. It gave Mario Cristobal and his staff a long look at the reserves, including quarterback Emory Williams.

Overall, Cristobal was pleased with Williams’ showing. A “solid” showing was dampened by some late-game sloppiness, but the backup quarterback looked sharp for the most part, Cristobal said.

“I think he looked really good when he had the supporting cast, most of the ones, some of the twos. He understands the offense really well. We protected well. We seemed to operate at a relatively high level and he did a good job,” Cristobal said.

Williams went 9-for-11 passing for 102 yards, not throwing a touchdown or interception. He was also sacked once for nine yards.

The struggles started to arise when more of the second- and third-stringers got in the game around Williams, Cristobal said.

“And then as the game went on a little bit, we were a little bit sloppy. Some free hitters in there, gave up a sack, really should’ve been a second one, right? And then didn’t look as sharp, as an offense. That’s the part that, that’s a let down. That’s what you don’t want to see. You want to see your team get better, even when you put in some of the other guys,” Cristobal said.

With a 48-7 win in tow and Williams having played relatively well, the sloppiness was not overly concerning to Cristobal.

“But overall, solid day by him,” Cristobal said.

Cristobal noted the sloppiness during a mid-game interview

The Miami Hurricanes were throttling the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats through three quarters on Thursday night, 41-0. However, Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal wasn’t too pleased when he spoke with Marilyn Payne of the ACC Network.

He spoke with her at the beginning of the fourth quarter and Cristobal wanted to see more consistency from the depth on his team.

“I mean, we would have liked to have gotten off to a better start defensively. We came out in the second half with a lot of guys. There should be no letdown. There should be no drop off. We’re trying to establish a standard. It was ok. You know, there were some things that were really showing up in a positive way, the second offense, you know, with the quarterback getting there, going down the field, and scoring. We’re gonna get some more guys involved and play some more football,” Cristobal said in the second half.
