Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal provided a troubling injury update on Monday following the scrimmage over the weekend. Although he revealed that freshman wideout Isaiah Horton could be back on the field within days, the latest on first-year running back TreVonte’ Citizen is much more concerning.

“Isaiah’s injury is probably a three-to-four day injury for him to come back,” Cristobal shared. “TreVonte is a little bit more significant and we’ll continue to assess and evaluate and it’s going to require some time. We’ll give a full description when it’s time but it’s significant, I think we saw that.”

Cristobal on Citizen injury: ‘It’s significant’

TreVonte’ Citizen signed with the Hurricanes in the 2022 recruiting class as a four-star prospect. He was the No. 94 recruit in the nation and No. 4 running back, according to the On3 Consensus.

Although he’s a true freshman, Citizen earned praise from the coaching staff ahead of the 2022 season. Depending on the severity of his injury, the 5-foot-11, 218-pound running back could find a role on the offense in year one.

“He gets after it,” Cristobal said of Citizen at the start of fall camp. “There’s no backing down in that guy. That guy is tough. He’s physical, he works, he wants to compete. He’s a big guy, now. That’s no little skinny dude, now.”

“TreVonte’ has taken great pride in, number one, choosing and coming to Miami, and adapting quickly to being in a different environment. And taking to a strength and conditioning regimen that is very demanding. As a freshman, those are, right, the most difficult parts of your path–your initial path. He’s done a great job with it and he’s gonna be in there competing right with the rest of them.”

As part of the injury report, Cristobal also shared that left tackle Zion Nelson “is really close” to getting back on the practice field.

Defensive tackle Jared Harrison-Hunte also missed practice on Monday but the head coach said he’ll be back for practice on Tuesday after getting “nicked up.”
