Miami tight end Cam McCormick told reporters Tuesday he will petition the ACC for a ninth season of eligibility. McCormick added that he is unsure if he would use the extra season of eligibility next year but wants to have the option available to him.

McCormick has been playing college football since the 2016 season.

He spent the first seven years of his career at Oregon. McCormick redshirted in 2016 before playing in 13 games in 2017. He was injured in the first game of 2018 and then missed all of the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Returning to the field in 2021, he played in two games before suffering a season-ending injury. McCormick was finally healthy in 2022 and once again played in 13 games.

The eighth-year player has emerged as a key player on offense for the Hurricanes this year, especially as a blocker.

“When I got to college I knew blocking would be a quicker way to get on the field, playing with great effort,” McCormick said. “So that’s what I mold my game around. (At Oregon) there were other guys ahead of me. It was always blocking, blocking, blocking. That’s where I started, molded my game. The passing game will come as it comes, but obviously I do think I would say to people I’m definitely a blocking tight end but also have the ability to run routes and catch the football. I do take pride in blocking.”

He was the No. 470 overall recruit and No. 27 tight end in the 2016 college recruiting class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

The No. 1 overall player in the recruiting class was Rashan Gary, who is currently in his fifth season with the Green Bay Packers. The No. 1 tight end in the 2016 class was Isaac Nauta.
