Miami has a critical season ahead, needing to keep pace under Mario Cristobal. Expectations fell way short in 2022, getting off to a rough start. Part of the reason was quarterback Tyler Van Dyke did not play up to his standard, significantly dropping off during his second year as the Hurricanes’ starter.

This caused a 5-7 record — the program’s second losing season in the last four campaigns.

Now, the page has been flipped to 2023 and the goal for Van Dyke heading into fall camp is a simple one. All he wants to do this year is win. There is a process that has to be played out, with the quarterback explaining it on Tuesday. Bu t the end of the day, coming out on top every Saturday is what it’s all about for Van Dyke.

“Last year didn’t go as planned,” Van Dyke said at the 2023 ACC Football Kickoff. “Yeah, it’s a new year. I think everything happens for a reason. You go through times of adversity for a reason. We’re just looking forward to this year, taking it one day at a time, staying focused in the present. Our goal is just to win. Just take it one day at a time, as I said, and just win.”

Everyone in Coral Gables has had similar goals for quite some time. Just once since Miami moved to the ACC have they finished the season with double-digit wins. That came during the 2017 season under Mark Richt, where the Hurricanes were even ranked No. 2 in a College Football Playoff ranking.

Van Dyke is hoping to be the guy who actually comes through on the goals. Everyone knows the potential is there, as evident by his 2021 stats. Moving into a second year under Cristobal and you hope Tyler Van Dyke has settled into the system and is ready to excel.

The journey to winning will begin in the near future, with Miami starting fall camp. As Van Dyke mentioned, one day will be taken at a time before eventually arriving at the season opener against their namesake, Miami (OH).

Look ahead to the following week and Texas A&M will be in town. A huge game for both programs but specifically Cristobal and Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher.

If Van Dyke is going to accomplish his goal for Miami this season, Sept. 9 against Texas A&M will be the first true test.
