Tyler Van Dyke discusses progress within new Miami offense

The Miami Hurricanes hired Shannon Dawson back in February as the program’s newest offensive coordinator. This means Miami will be running a different offense than the one they did in 2022 and in 2021.

During the spring, Hurricane players have been getting used to a new leader and new playcalling system for yet another season. One of those players is last year’s starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke. Van Dyke is in his third year at the program and finds himself figuring out yet another offensive playbook come on, but he is not discouraged by this at all. During a recent interview, the Hurricane signal caller discussed is progress within the new Miami offense.

“It’s been good. There’s a lot of different ways that he gets to plays in the run game, pass game, which is good,” said Van Dyke. “When you first get used to a new offense, it takes a while because you have to install new plays and then RPOs, passes, (and) runs. And then we have to figure out a way to add some plays in tough situations that the defense proposes. So, that’s what we’re kind of at right now. We’re kind of installed most of our stuff right now, and we’re seeing what the defense gives us, and we’re changing plays here and there. (Its) kind of playing more games now.

“I’m definitely picking this one up faster. I think it’s just because I’m older now. I’ve been around a lot of offenses now. I mean, football is football. A lot of concepts are similar; it is just different ways coaches communicate it that’s and get to those plays. So I feel very confident and comfortable with his play calling and his plays.”

Dawson spent many seasons under Dana Holgorsen at both West Virginia and later Houston running an Air Raid offense. There he worked with quarterbacks Geno Smith and most recently Clayton Tune, who threw for 40 touchdowns in 2022 with the Cougars. Houston ranked eighth in the country with 314 passing yards per game and 17th with 36.1 points per game this past season.

Van Dyke has not had a steady and stable offense since entering the Hurricanes program. And as many years as he’s been there, three, he has had different offensive coordinators. Van Dyke feels like he has a good connection with his new offensive coordinator, Dawson, and his offensive philosophy. And that should bode well for him and Miami next season as they try to bounce back from a forgettable 2022 campaign.

Van Dyke played just nine games last season as he battled with injuries and finished with 1,835 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions. But with the new offensive system, he’ll hope to bounce back as Miami aims to improve on a 5-7 record in Cristobal’s inaugural season.
