Gary Ferman and JD PicKell Discuss the Success of Miami Early Into the 2023 Season

After winning just five games a year ago, Tyler Van Dyke and Miami now sit at 3-0 following Thursday night’s 48-7 victory over Bethune-Cookman. It was another tune-up for the Hurricanes, who now have one game to go before diving head-first into ACC play.

But to Van Dyke, Miami will have success if it doesn’t get too comfortable with the lead. Thursday night, the Hurricanes showed they could handle that.

“I think we learned how to handle success a little bit,” Van Dyke told ACC Network’s Marilyn Payne after the game. “That’s one of the hardest things to do. You don’t want to get complacent. We came out and handled in business tonight.”

Van Dyke continued to look good following his impressive start to the season, throwing for 247 yards and two touchdowns on an efficient 19 of 23 passing. He also ran in a touchdown for the second time in his career.

Tyler Van Dyke: Miami wanted to ‘execute as well as possible’ vs. Bethune-Cookman

On the whole, the Hurricanes looked strong on offense. Van Dyke also pointed out how well the ball was distributed — 10 different players had a reception — and said that’s one of the most important takeaways from the victory.

“Our goal tonight was to come out and execute as well as possible. I think we did that,” Van Dyke said. “A lot of guys got the ball in their hands today, which I’m super proud of. We’re going to keep working [and] getting better.”

Miami was firing on all cylinders on offense. In addition to a combined 349 passing yards from Van Dyke and Emory Williams, the Hurricanes had 240 rushing yards on the ground. Don Chaney Jr. led the way with 73 yards and a touchdown while Ajay Allen Jr. had 68 yards and two scores, as well.

For Van Dyke, it was quite a moment to get that rushing touchdown. Although he didn’t have a nickname for the occasion since nothing “came to mind,” he made sure to point out how special the moment was to reach the end zone as a runner.

“That was my second rushing touchdown in my career, so that was pretty cool to get in there,” Van Dyke said. “O-Line did a great job blocking for me, so it was fun.”

Next up for Miami is another non-conference game against Temple in Week 4. After that, the Hurricanes head into the bye week before kicking off conference play Oct. 7 against Georgia Tech at home.
