The Miami Hurricanes’ offense suffered a massive loss before the start of Saturday’s night against the Clemson Tigers. Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke tried to go in warmups and the decision was made afterwards that he will not start against the Tigers, according to Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Van Dyke had been limited in practice all week and was a game time decision on Saturday evening. He was shown early on the ACC Network broadcast on the Miami bench and he was dressed in street clothes. So, he will not see any action on Saturday evening.

True freshman quarterback Emory Williams will start in his place, according to multiple reports. Coming out of Milton High School (Milton, Florida), Williams was ranked as the No. 36 quarterback prospect in the country, according to the On3 Industry Rankings for the 2023 cycle. As a senior, he completed 62.6% of his passes for 2,049 yards, while tossing in 21 touchdowns with four interceptions. Williams earned 2021 All-Area second team honors from the Pensacola News Journal.

While Van Dyke has struggled in his past two games, throwing five interceptions in his last two games, he’s looked much better in 2023. He’s completed 70.5% of his passes for 1,721 yards, while tossing in 16 touchdowns with six interceptions.

Earlier in the week, Mario Cristobal said that Van Dyke would be able to play on Saturday night

Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal said earlier this week that he was confident Van Dyke would be able to go, but there were also reports that Van Dyke’s injury was more serious than Cristobal was letting on.

“I keep telling you I don’t talk about injuries,” Cristobal said. “I just told one of our guys that he’s ready to go. So you have to write what you have to write. Next question please.”

It’s clear that Cristobal was not trying to speak about Van Dyke’s injury after his star quarterback was sacked three times and hit hard versus the Tar Heels defense on Saturday. But regarding his status for their next game, he made it clear there’s no concern about Van Dyke being under center for the Hurricanes this Saturday when they face Clemson.

“For him playing? Zero. Was he banged up in the game? Yeah he got banged up. But is he tough? Absolutely. He’s really tough, he wants to win, he’s ready to roll,” Cristobal added.
