McDonough (Ga.) Eagles Landing Christian Academy four-star cornerback Colton Hood has decommitted from Michigan State‘s 2023 recruiting class, Jason Killop of SpartanMag confirmed Saturday night. The Spartans parted ways with Hood and do not expect him to be in their 2023 group.

Hood is the No. 687 overall prospect and No. 65 cornerback in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also a three-star recruit and the No. 66 player in Georgia.

On3 rates Hood higher than other recruiting services, according to the Industry Comparison. Per the 2023 On300, he is a four-star recruit, the No. 272 overall prospect, No. 32 cornerback and No. 27 player in Georgia.

Right now, Auburn has a commanding lead to land a commitment from the 6-foot-1, 175-pound defensive back, according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine. The Tigers’ odds are currently 96.3%.

RPM was released to the public in December. The On3 engineering group teamed up with Spiny.ai to create the industry’s first algorithm and machine learning-based product to predict where athletes will attend college.

It factors in machine learning, social sentiment, visits and historical trends. However, expert predictions are still a big piece of the RPM equation.

Michigan State’s 2023 group now contains 11 commits. Two are cornerbacks: Denton (Texas) Ryan four-star Chance Rucker and Tampa (Fla.) Carrollwood Day three-star Eddie Pleasant.

Hood has an On3 NIL Valuation of $6.3K. The On3 NIL Valuation is an index that looks to set the standard market value for both high school and college-level athletes. The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.

Colton Hood On3 Scouting Summary

The following is the On3 Scouting Summary for Colton Hood:

“Two-way star who flashes his ball skills at corner and wide receiver but also shows off his change of direction and wiggle at the quarterback position. Multifaceted athlete with length that allows him to make plays on the ball as a defender with ease. Shows physicality as a runner with the ball in his hands and when working downhill as a defender. Takes on blockers and is a willing tackler in the run game. Excellent zone defender, possesses tremendous field vision and breaks on the ball quickly.

“Long speed is solid but not top-tier, could see him potentially transition to safety. Impressive return man producing as a kick returner and punt returner. Two-time all-region center fielder for his high school baseball team. Heady high floor player who will carve out a role on defense early on in his career as a nickel or deep half safety. Potentially could slide to boundary corner as he becomes more comfortable in man coverage.”
