Mel Tucker and the Michigan State Spartans have struck in the transfer portal once again. This time, they have dipped into SEC territory and will be pulling from the reigning national champions.

Georgia cornerback Ameer Speed announced he would be heading to East Lancing on Tuesday. He explained his decision via Twitter and said he was “honored” to be playing for Michigan State.

“Coach Tucker and Coach Barnett are two people I wanted to work with when I came out of high school,” Speed said. “I knew that they could develop me into the man and the player that I strived to be. So to have the opportunity to be coached by the two is a true blessing.”

Speed was originally a member of the 2017 recruiting class and was ranked a four-star prospect by the On3 Consensus. During his recruitment, Tucker was the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach for Georgia.

Beginning the season as the starter for Georgia, Speed appeared in 13 games for the Bulldogs. The cornerback spent five years in Athens, playing in a total of 48 games. He recorded 25 tackles and one pass defended.

Speed was highly recruited coming out of high school. Programs such as Auburn, Florida State, Michigan, Notre Dame, and USC offered. Speed was originally a member of the 2017 recruiting class and will have one more year of eligibility thanks to the COVID-19 rules.

Speed comes from Jacksonville, FL, and was the No. 52 in-state prospect. He ranked as the No. 37 cornerback but has developed into a quality starter throughout his time in Athens. An SEC caliber defensive back is now heading to Michigan State.

Michigan State Spartans announce hiring of pass rush specialist

Michigan State has hired Brandon Jordan as its pass rush specialist, the school announced Saturday. On3’s Matt Zenitz first reported the news on Wednesday.

Jordan doesn’t have much college coaching experience, but he has developed quite the reputation as a trainer. He has worked with several NFL stars including TJ Watt, Chandler Jones, Cameron Heyward and Jadeveon Clowney. In all, he has trained 195 players that are currently on NFL rosters.

Jordan is expected to continue training NFL players while working with the Spartans. That could bring some big names through East Lansing, which would be a big win for recruiting.

Michigan State already the best pass rush in the Big Ten this past season, averaging a league-leading 3.31 sacks per game. In spite of this, however, they ranked last in passing defense, giving up 325.1 yards per contest through the air.
