The Michigan State Spartans are looking for their second win of the season at home on Saturday against the Richmond Spiders. With a 14-0 lead midway through the second quarter, the Spartans are well on the way to starting the season 2-0, especially with tight end Maliq Carr hauling in ridiculous one-handed catches like the one below.

That 22 yard reception would end up being Carr’s only catch in the game. But the 6-foot-6 redshirt junior made sure his lone catch on the day was one for the highlight reel.

Michigan State cruises to victory with balanced play

Michigan State cruised to victory over Richmond 45-14 thanks to balanced play in all areas of the game. The Spartans’ defense pitched a shutout for the first three quarters before finally allowing the Spiders on the board in the fourth. Michigan State’s defense suffocated Richmond’s offense on third downs allowing one successful conversion in 12 attempts. The 193 total yards of offense the Spartans’ defense gave up is also the lowest in the Mel Tucker coaching era.

Michigan State quarterback Noah Kim was impressive and poised from the pocket as he completed 18 of his 22 pass attempts for 292 yards and three touchdowns. He also tacked on six rushes for 21 yards for good measure. But Week 2’s offensive game ball belongs to running back Nathan Carter. Carter finished the game with 19 carries for 111 yards, averaging 5.8 yards per carry while setting a new career best with three rushing touchdowns.

What makes the sophomore from Rochester, NY, performance all the more impressive is all three of his house calls came in the third quarter, including a 44-yard scamper for his second house call of the game.

Michigan State climbs a tunnel with a huge matchup at home in week three against the top-10-ranked Washington Huskies. Washington was able to pick up the 39-28 victory last season when the two teams faced off thanks to an impressive performance by their Heisman-hopeful quarterback, Michael Penix Jr.

Last year, Penix threw for nearly 400 yards (397) with four touchdowns and did not throw a single interception. If Michigan State wants to get revenge on the Huskies in Week 3, they will need to start by disrupting the former Indiana Hoosiers quarterback’s rhythm in the pocket.
