Michigan State Spartans offensive lineman Braden Miller has entered the Transfer Portal.

Braden Miller played high school football at Eaglecrest (Colorado), where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 1,055 overall recruit in the 2022 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Miller ended up spending two seasons with the Spartans. He took a redshirt during the 2022 season before playing in three games during the 2023 season. Those games were against Richmond, Penn State, and Indiana. He was also an Academic All-Big Ten selection.

For the two seasons that Braden Miller was at Michigan State, Mel Tucker began the season as the head coach. However, amid a scandal, Tucker was relieved of his duties as the head coach by Michigan State. Harlon Barnett replaced him as the interim head coach before the program ultimately hired Jonathan Smith as the team’s next permanent head football coach.

In his two seasons at Michigan State, the Spartans went 5-7 and 4-8 respectively. In this most recent season, the Spartans had one of the worst offenses in college football. Michigan State was 131st in scoring offense in 2023, only scoring 15.9 points per game. Amid the offense’s struggles, Michigan State was 127th in rushing offense at 89.5 yards per game. The Spartans were also 37th in sacks allowed, giving up 1.33 per game.

Michigan State and the Transfer Portal

With the Spring Transfer Portal window now open, the Michigan State Spartans appear to be a team that’s going to be active within the portal. Given the coaching change to Jonathan Smith that probably isn’t overly surprising, as players decide to move on instead of continuing under Smith and he looks to bring in more players that he recruited.

During the Winter window, Michigan State saw plenty of movement, with 18 players leaving the program and 11 coming into the program at that time. That left the Spartans with the 51st-ranked transfer class in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 College Football Team Transfer Portal Rankings.

Another concern that Jonathan Smith needs to navigate is getting the Michigan State roster to 85 scholarship players between incoming freshmen and transfers as well as the outgoing ones.
