Former Old Dominion linebacker Wayne Matthews has committed to Michigan State, he announced Wednesday on X. He spent three seasons in Norfolk, Virginia before entering the transfer portal earlier this cycle.

Matthews broke onto the scene for Old Dominion in 2023 having notched 135 tackles, 3.5 sacks and three forced fumbles during his redshirt sophomore season. He will have two years of eligibility remaining at MSU.

Before college, Matthews played his high school football at Charles Herbert Flowers (MD) High School, where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 1,964 overall recruit in the 2021 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services. More than overlooked in his high school days, he was the No. 215 linebacker in his class and No. 46 player out of the state of Maryland.

He will play under first-year head coach Jonathan Smith, who is tasked with turning the Spartan program around after a successful stint at Oregon State.
