Ijamsville (Md.) Oakdale four-star EDGE Dominic Nichols recently sat down with his mom to talk about his future plans. That talk led him to a realization.

Nichols announced his pledge to Michigan Sunday afternoon picking the Wolverines over Clemson and Kentucky.

“Michigan’s been up there pretty high and I was also high on Clemson,” Nichols told On3. “I didn’t get an OV to Clemson as I had other things to do. Getting that OV to Michigan and getting to be around the coaches and players more, I felt pretty comfortable there.”

When it came down to it, Nichols said that Michigan’s EDGE production uder Jim Harbaugh, the education and the program’s strength and conditioning program were the main reasons why Michigan won out for him.

Nichols took his official visit to Michigan on June 9. During that visit is when he says it really dawned on him that he’d likely be calling Ann Arbor his future home.

“Everyone up there treats everyone the same,” said Nichols, the No. 380 player in the 2024 class. “They don’t treat the walk-on players any differently than the scholarship players which is great. It really is like a family.”

While the June visit was when it really became clear to him where Michigan stood with him, Nichols said the Wolverines have been on him for months now.

Michigan extended an offer to Nichols in January and he says it was March when the Wolverines coaching staff really started pursuing him hard. He was in Ann Arbor the first time in April.

“They made it pretty clear in March that they wanted me to get down there unofficially,” Nichols said. “I was able to make it and from then on we just went from there.”

Nichols’ sees a national-title winner with Michigan

Michigan’s been on a bit of roll building its 2024 class. Nichols is the Wolverines’ 23rd pledge so far as they’ve put together the No. 5 class in the country.

Between that success on the recruiting trail and the back-to-back playoff appearances, Nichols says that he has high hopes regarding the situation he’s headed into.

“Everyone wants to play for the national championship and I feel like that can be done at Michigan,” Nichols said. “They’ve shown it these past couple of years. This recruiting class is good but they’re also going to have another really great year on the field as well.”

For Nichols, all of that success starts at the top with Jim Harbaugh.

“He’s great and I’ve got a lot of respect for what he’s done for the program,” Nichols said. “He’s really down to earth and is really invested in the team succeeding.”
