On3’s Bracketologist James Fletcher III joined Andy Staples On3, focusing on a fascinating issue facing Dusty May as he takes his talents from Florida Atlantic to the Michigan Wolverines.

First, Staples prefaced the challenges facing May with an interesting explanation on what May is dealing with, particularly as he looks to bring in undergraduate transfer to Ann Arbor, dealing with issues regarding Michigan’s strict admission guidelines.

“That discussion about the admissions thing was really interesting I thought, because everybody assumes that certain schools have higher admissions, but in this particular case, it’s not like — Michigan, if you cover their recruiting enough, you know, in terms of guidance getting guys at high school, they get most of the guys they want,” Staples stated. “They do have a little bit higher admission. But it’s undergraduate transfers was the the key here.

“Like I guess grad transfers, there’s not really much of a problem, they can get them in. But undergrad transfers seem to be the one that is the hardest part. And in college basketball right now, you’ve got to be able to have a pretty wide net to cast for the undergrad transfers.”

Evidently, Fletcher III agrees that it might be difficult for May at Michigan regarding the portal at first, but once he realizes the guidelines the Wolverines must adhere to, the program will be fine in the future.

“I know they’ve been able to get in a few here and there. They’ve been able to mix it up, but it’s going to be figuring out how it all translates. I’m sure that Dusty May is going to hire somebody who will be all over that. He’s going to have an understanding of which players he can or cannot bring in,” Fletcher III responded. “It’s interesting though, because we see the Stanford job is open right now as well. And it’s not the same thing, but last year, it becoming such a storyline surrounding Caleb Love in particular, I thought it was interesting to kind of parallel the Stanford job, and how hard it is to recruit, to bring in a transfer there, versus what it’s going to be at Michigan for Dusty May.

“Should it be easier? Yeah, it should be way easier. But does that mean that it’s going to be you know, ‘Oh, there’s the number one player in the portal. Let’s go add him to the roster.’ No, there might be a couple more steps that go into it than that.”

Alas, time will tell how long it takes Dusty May to have Michigan back as a contender in the Big Ten, but he’s certainly built for it after his time at FAU. We’ll see if he utilizes the portal to his advantage, especially at first in Ann Arbor.
