Clayton Sayfie On How Sherrone Moore Is Similar, Different To Jim Harbaugh | 01.28.24

Michigan is promoting Grant Newsome as the program’s offensive line coach according to Chris Balas of On3’s The Wolverine. Newsome was previously the tight end’s coach but will make the switch under newly hired head coach Sherrone Moore.

With some turnover occurring throughout the program, Newsome should be a familiar face for one of Michigan’s best position groups. Moore was previously the offensive line coach while also serving as the offensive coordinator. But now as the head coach, he hands the duty off.

Newsome is getting back to his roots as an offensive lineman, playing at Michigan for four seasons. He made 10 appearances with a total of six starts during the 2015 and 2016 seasons. However, due to an injury suffered back in 2017, he eventually announced his retirement the following year to get into the coaching world.

Former ead coach Jim Harbaugh placed Newsome with the tight ends as a student coach and eventually moved his way up to full-time staff. Colston Loveland wound up being one of the best in the country at the position, finishing with 45 receptions for 649 yards and four touchdowns. The latter two stats were good enough for second on Michigan en route to a national championship.

Michigan offensive line coming off two recent Joe Moore Awards

Moore took a similar career path to Newsome, beginning his time at Michigan as the tight ends coach. Harbaugh promoted him to offensive line coach ahead of the 2021 season and the results instantly paid off. The Wolverines had the best front in the country for two consecutive seasons, with some hardware to prove it.

Michigan was announced as the Joe Moore Award winner following the 2021 and 2022 seasons, being the first-ever program to win in back-to-back years. Alabama is the only other school to have won on two occasions as well, coming in 2015 and 2020 for the Crimson Tide.

While they did not win this past year, a national championship will have to do instead. Michigan will still lean on the offensive line moving forward though, likely keeping the same offensive identity with Moore as the head coach.

However, there will be some talent to replace with multiple players leaving the program in the favor of the NFL. Newsome will be tasked with putting together a new starting five. Moore will certainly be there to help as well, hoping to keep the high standard going.
