Josh Gattis’ departure left a hole on Michigan’s coaching staff. As a result, Jim Harbaugh is shaking up the Etch-A-Sketch.

Michigan announced multiple coaching staff changes on Wednesday. Sherrone Moore will continue as co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach after spending 2021 in the role. Matt Weiss is now moving up to co-offensive coordinator alongside Moore after spending last year as quarterbacks coach. The two will share play-calling duties, Harbaugh said.

“We have great chemistry among the coaches on our offensive staff,” Harbaugh said in a statement. “The teamwork has been exceptional. Everyone has been integral to our offensive success and each coach’s contribution has and will continue to be valued. Coach Sherrone Moore and coach Matt Weiss will share play-calling duties with our objective being to maximize our players’ talents and put them in the best position to be successful. I am excited about the leadership and coaching of our offensive staff.”

Moore joined Michigan in 2018 as tight ends coach and transitioned to offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator in 2021. Weiss spent 12 years with the Baltimore Ravens, working his way up from head coach’s assistant in 2009 to running backs coach from 2019-20, before joining Michigan this season as quarterbacks coach.

Gattis was Michigan’s offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach since 2019 and left for Miami this week.

Michigan announces more changes to football coaching staff

Harbaugh also announced more changes to his staff. Former Michigan offensive lineman Grant Newsome is moving over to tight ends coach after spending the last few years as a graduate assistant. Newsome was also a student assistant from 2018-19 after after an injury cut his playing career short.

“Grant has been a positive, motivating force within our coaching staff since he joined us as a student assistant,” Harbaugh stated. “We have had a front-row seat to Grant’s development as a coach and are excited that he has chosen to accept our offer to become a full-time assistant. He is a future star in this profession, and our players really respect what Grant is teaching on the field and the insight that he shares from life experiences. We are excited to have Grant and his wife, Coco, continue as key members of the Michigan Football family.”

In addition to Newsome’s promotion, Ron Bellamy is moving over to wide receivers coach after working as safeties coach last season. Mike Hart is now the program’s run game coordinator in addition to his duties as running backs coach.
