Jim Harbaugh tested out his two-quarterback system again during Michigan’s 51-7 win over Colorado State. Cade McNamara was the starter at quarterback against the Rams on Saturday. Even so, JJ McCarthy saw his own time and played well too. With McCarthy’s turn to start coming this weekend against Hawaii, Harbaugh highlighted a talent that separates McCarthy from most quarterbacks.

Harbaugh discussed this ability of McCarthy’s during his press conference on Monday. He said McCarthy’s speed and mobility at his position are some things defenses, even Michigan’s, have to account for.

“I think he definitely pulls defenders. They have to know where he is. Our defensive coaches are the same way,” said Harbaugh. “There needs to be a plan when somebody can put out a quarterback who can run in the 4.5s. That gets to be faster than linebackers.”

McCarthy showed off his wheels during his limited appearance this weekend. He was able to connect on all four of his passes for 30 yards. However, his legs earned him an additional 50 yards and a touchdown on just three attempts.

If anything were to separate the two quarterbacks, that would be where McCarthy has the advantage over McNamara. Harbaugh realizes the pressure it puts on defense to have to scheme for a quarterback who can beat you with his arm and in the run game.

“You gotta have a plan to contain that. You can definitely see, even if he’s carrying out a fake, somebody’s paying attention,” said Harbaugh.

The Wolverine faithful are hoping to see McCarthy’s talents fully unleashed this weekend. With how Jim Harbaugh is running his quarterback competition, this is the former Top-10 QB prospect’s chance to win the job. If McCarthy can play a productive part in the run game too, that may be what gets him over the hump and gives him the opportunity to be Michigan’s full-time starter moving forward.
