Michigan co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss spoke with media on Sunday regarding the Wolverines quarterback competition in fall camp. Michigan is currently undergoing a quarterback battle between last year’s starter, Cade McNamara, and their talented sophomore J.J. McCarthy.

“JJ definitely [is] working his way back into it,” said Weiss. “I think we’re blessed to have two guys that would start at most places. And we have two really good quarterbacks and the best player’s gonna play. I would say they’re both really improved. You look at last fall, Cade has improved physically [and] just like any player has gotten better mentally with experience. And he’s playing at a really high level. And then JJ’s done the same thing, so we’re in a great position with both of those guys.”

McNamara might have an advantage heading into fall camp as a proven quarterback, leading Michigan to a Big Ten Championship last season and a trip to the College Football Playoff — but McCarthy’s talent keeps him a strong option for the Wolverines if he can win the battle this year. McCarthy was limited in spring from throwing due to a shoulder injury, but is back to full action as he battles for the job.

Last season saw Michigan use both quarterbacks at times, with McCarthy impressing in his contributions as a freshman. McNamara finished the season with 2,576 yards and 15 touchdowns with six interceptions as the primary quarterback for the team.

However, McCarthy’s mobility and physical ability was a big boost to the Wolverines in its own way — with him passing for 516 yards and five touchdowns and two interceptions. McCarthy also added 124 yards rushing and another two touchdowns with his legs.

It’s possible that Jim Harbaugh will continue to use both quarterbacks throughout the season, but if he hopes to replicate last season’s success it will almost certainly start with who he picks to lead the offense full-time.
