Michigan president Santa Ono has announced that head coach Jim Harbaugh is staying in Ann Arbor as head coach of the Wolverines.

“I just got off the phone with Coach Harbaugh and Jim shared with me the great news that he is going to remain as the Head Coach of the Michigan Wolverines,” Ono tweeted Monday. “That is fantastic news that I have communicated to our Athletic Director Warde Manuel.”

In a separate tweet from the Michigan football account, Harbaugh released a statement of his own.

“I love the relationships that I have at Michigan — coaches, staff, families administration, President Santa Ono and especially the players and their families. My heart is at the University of Michigan. I once heard a wise man say ‘Don’t try to out-happy, happy.’ Go Blue,” Harbaugh said.

For the second straight offseason, NFL rumors have swirled around Harbaugh and the Wolverines after a fantastic regular season.

Harbaugh led Michigan to a 12-0 regular season and Big Ten Championship Game win this past fall before falling to TCU in the Fiesta Bowl with a College Football Playoff Championship Game appearance on the line.

He is 74-25 in eight seasons as head coach of the Wolverines after starring as a quarterback for the program in the 1980s.

This is the longest Harbaugh has ever stayed at one place in his coaching career, and actually in his life as well as his father moved the family around during Harbaugh’s childhood for his coaching career.

Jim Harbaugh has at least 10 wins in four of his eight seasons with the Wolverines, and a winning record in seven eight. However, Michigan is 1-6 in bowl games under Harbaugh and haven’t won one since his first season in 2015.

They are 2-0 in Big Ten Championship Games, winning in both 2021 and 2022.
