Still early in the cycle, Mineral (Va.) Woodberry Forest four-star running back Savion Hiter is the top running back in the 2026 recruiting class.

He is the nation’s No. 20 overall prospect, No. 1 tailback and top recruit from Virginia in the 2026 cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking — a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

On Thursday, Michigan will receive a visit from that top running back.

Hiter told On3’s Steve Wiltfong that he will be in Ann Arbor Thursday, and that other early frontrunners include Clemson, Georgia and Ohio State.

More on Hiter’s recruitment

New Michigan running backs coach Tony Alford, who just left Columbus this spring, recently offered Hiter.

“I know they have really good academics there,” Hiter told The Wolverine earlier this month. “That’s what I’m looking for. I want to better myself mentally. They have a great team. They won the national championship. I was excited about the offer.”

Alford and Hiter already had a previous relationship from when the former was at Ohio State.

“Coach Alford is great,” Hiter said. “We had a great bond at Ohio State. I’m glad he moved over to Michigan. I’m looking forward to keep building my bond with him at a new school. He’s very straightforward. He doesn’t BS about anything. I just really like him.”

The Wolverines’ run-first offense impresses Hiter.

“Blake Corum and (Donovan) Edwards are great running backs,” Hiter said. “They are a dynamic duo. I was very impressed with them and the national championship win. That’s what I like to see.”

Hiter told On3 in March that Clemson also made a good first impression.

“The first impression about Clemson wasn’t really what I expected… and that’s a good thing,” Hiter told On3. “I was very impressed with Clemson. Graduation is a top priority for them, they have a long history of winning on the field and academically and they develop you not only for football but for after football.”
