Tarris Reed weighs in on relationship with Dug McDaniel, teammates

In Michigan‘s recent victory over Northwestern freshmen Tarris Reed and Dug McDaniel had the biggest games of their young collegiate careers, helping lead the Wolverines to an 85-78 win over the Wildcats. On the court, Michigan’s younger players have been handling business. But Reed was recently asked about his relationship with McDaniel off the court.

“Yeah that’s my roommate, I mean every day we’re battling head to head, we can argue about anything but I know that’s all out of love and on that court we push all that aside and we’re gonna play together,” Reed said. “So that’s my dog, I know I trust him and he trusts me so we’re gonna get it done on and off the court.”

Reed was asked more specifically what the two argue about, ranging from who the goat debate in professional basketball to each others stature.

“MJ versus Lebron or we’re arguing about who could dunk better, or it could even be who’s taller and he’ll somehow convince me that he’s taller than me, so we’re just overall having fun and just love talking to each other,” Reed smiled and said.

McDaniel, a guard, only stands at 5-foot-11, and definitely will need another growth spurt to catch up to the 6-foot-10 Reed, as he settled who he believes is the greatest basketball player of all time.

“MJ, got to go MJ,” Reed said.

Transitioning from high school to college isn’t always easy, especially for someone far from home like Reed whose a St. Louis, Missouri native. But it definitely helps to have a roommate and teammates to bond with, and some experience learned from the first semester.

“It’s definitely been a smooth transition to second semester than the first because having to balance school and basketball was tough, especially in the college atmosphere where I’m by myself. So I was able to learn from my first semester and use that for my second semester, so we just started last week so it’s been pretty smooth so far,” Reed said.

Versus Northwestern McDaniel had a career-high 17 points, burring three three-pointers on the night and achieving the fifth double-digit scoring outing of his freshman season. Reed also played his part off of the bench, logging the second-most minutes of his young career with 18 and stuffing the box score with six points, eight rebounds, two blocks, and a steal.

The freshman duo is handling business on and off the court like Reed said, and will look to continue to do so as they take on Maryland in their next matchup on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in a game airing on ESPN.
