Golden Gophers running back Trey Potts is still in the hospital following an unspecified injury he sustained late in the win versus Purdue on Saturday. Minnesota took the win 20-13 but the team had to travel home without Potts.

Potts is still in an Indiana hospital but is “doing well,” according to comments released by the Minnesota athletics department.

“University of Minnesota running back Trey Potts left the field in the fourth quarter of the team’s Oct. 2, 2021, game at Purdue,” the school shared. “Potts was immediately observed and treated by the team’s medical staff and was then transported to a hospital for further observation.

“Director of Athletics Mark Coyle, Head Football Athletic Trainer Mike Sypniak and team physician Dr. David Jewison remained in Indiana overnight on Saturday with Potts. At this time, Potts remains in Indiana with his family and is receiving medical attention. His condition is improving and he is doing well. The University, with the permission of Potts and his family, will provide further updates when they are available.”

The former three-star running back prospect out of Williamsport, Pennsylvania rushed for 78 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries Saturday.

Potts is leading all Minnesota running backs with 552 rushing yards and six touchdowns. He’s also notched two receptions for 14 yards.

The 5-foot-11, 210-pound back is in the midst of a breakout season. He redshirted after enrolling early in 2019 and posted 121 yards and one touchdown in five games played in 2020.

Potts has stepped up in a major way for the Gophers. The team lost the Big Ten’s top returning running back Mohamed Ibrahim after Week 1. Ibrahim 163 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries before going down in Minnesota’s 45-31 loss to Ohio State.

Potts recovers, Gophers rest

The Minnesota Golden Gophers are resting up during their bye week as their running back Trey Potts remains hospitalized in Indiana. PJ Fleck’s squad gets the weekend off before facing Nebraska on Oct. 16.

Minnesota, sitting at 3-2, hosts 3-3 Nebraska for a noon ET kickoff. The Gophers lead the all-time series versus the Cornhuskers 35-25-2 and are on a two-game win streak.

This season, Fleck’s come up with wins versus Miami (OH), Colorado and Purdue. The 1-1 record in conference play puts Minnesota in second in the Big 10 West behind undefeated No. 3-ranked Iowa. Based on the current AP Top 25 rankings, the Gophers have just one game left versus a ranked opponent. They’ll take on the Hawkeyes on No. 13 on the road.
