Mississippi State is zeroing in on an addition to the coaching staff of new head coach Zach Arnett. Utah wide receivers coach and Mississippi State alum Chad Bumphis is being sought to join the Bulldogs staff, according to Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger.

Bumphis played football for the Bulldogs and is the second all-time leading receiver in the history of the football program. In four seasons from 2009-12, Bumphis had 2270 receiving yards at a 14.3 yards per catch clip. He had 24 career touchdown receptions.

After a brief NFL career, Bumphis joined the staff at Iowa Wesleyan — where Mike Leach once coached — before doing a stint as a graduate assistant at Buffalo. He came to Utah in 2018, then left for Austin Peay where he served as wide receivers coach. He returned to Utah in 2021 for a second stint on the staff, where he has been the wide receivers coach.

A native of Mississippi and a Mississippi State alum, coming back to coach for the Bulldogs seems like a completely natural fit for Bumphis.

Report: Mississippi State to promote linebackers coach Matt Brock to DC

Mississippi State linebackers coach Matt Brock is expected to be promoted to defensive coordinator according to a report from Sport Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger. Brock has been with the Bulldogs for the past three seasons, hired in 2020 as the team’s special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach.

He was former defensive coordinator Zach Arnett’s ‘right hand man’ and now that Arnett has been promoted from interim head coach to full-time head coach following the tragic passing of Mike Leach, Brock will now assume the role of defensive coordinator and play caller.

Brock was MSU’s defense play caller in their ReliaQuest Bowl victory over Illinois, where they held the Fighting Illini to just 10 points and under 300 yards of total offense.
