Nebraska has made waves this season for their inability to snatch victories from the jaws of defeat. Coming off another close loss to Wisconsin, the Cornhuskers got some more bad news — quarterback Adrian Martinez will miss the team’s final game against Iowa.

On Monday afternoon, coach Scott Frost announced the news regarding Martinez. In his stead, backup quarterback Logan Smothers is in-line to start. Now, the Cornhuskers chances of ending their season on a high note have taken a huge hit.

Nebraska may not have many victories on the season, but Martinez has been far from the problem. On the season, the Nebraska quarterback has passed for 2,863 yards and 14 touchdowns — adding 525 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground as well.

While Martinez has had an uneven career with Nebraska, this means it’s possible we’ve seen the last of him wearing the uniform. In the end, he’s the all-time leader in total offense for Nebraska — an accomplishment that’s nothing to scoff at.

Still, the Cornhuskers have been mired in mediocrity in his time with the program. He was an important player, but the lack of team success around him will be just as prevalent to his story.

Nebraska continues to find ways to lose in 2021

While Adrian Martinez may not get a chance at revenge for all of Nebraska’s close losses this season, Scott Frost will. Next season, there’s plenty of wrongs for the Cornhuskers to try to right.

It’s been a season of heartbreak for Nebraska, starting with their opening day loss to Illinois. After that, their next loss came against Oklahoma — a game where the Cornhuskers came oh-so close to defeating the Sooners.

The hits kept coming, as an overtime loss to Michigan State propelled the Spartans on a wild ride. While the Cornhuskers dismantled Northwestern 56-7 the next weekend, it’s been rough seas for Frost and Martinez ever since.

Martinez couldn’t close the deal against some stiff Big Ten competition, losing by seven or less to Michigan, Minnesota and Purdue. After a nine-point loss to Ohio State, the Cornhuskers fell by seven once again to Wisconsin.

Now, a stressful season comes to an end at home for Nebraska — the Iowa Hawkeyes are coming to town. While they’re not the College Football Playoff contender we once thought, a win over Kirk Ferentz’s squad can help excite Cornhuskers fans for 2022.

Adrian Martinez won’t be on the field this Friday. Still, Nebraska has a chance to win for their leader — to end the 2021 season on a high note.
