The Nebraska Cornhuskers suffered two injuries at the same time in the second quarter of Saturday’s game against the Northwestern Wildcats. Wide receiver Billy Kemp appeared to injure his left knee on a play and offensive lineman Ethan Piper was injured, as well. Early in the second quarter, Big Ten Network sideline reporter Brooke Fletcher updated fans on the status of both players.

“Yeah guys some injury updates for you after Billy Kemp was taken off the field, he was taken into the tent there. And he was in tears. He recently just came out and was greeted by his parents, Bill Kemp, and it appears to be his mom. It looks like they’re putting a brace on his left leg. While he came out, Ethan Piper went back into the tent there and his parents Lisa and Les are out here waiting to hear more. I’ll keep you guys updated.”

Piper was later carted off the field and to the locker room, per Zack Carpenter. Both starters went down with lower body injuries on the same play.

Entering Saturday’s game against Northwestern, Kemp was the team’s leading receiver, hauling in 20 catches for 219 receiving yards. Before transferring to Nebraska, Kemp made his mark in a big way with the Virginia Cavaliers. He hauled in 192 catches during his time in Charlottesville–ranking him fourth all-time in career catches in UVA football history. Kemp also became the first player to lead the team in punt return yards in four straight seasons.

The Nebraska defense propelled them to a 17-9 victory

The Nebraska defense stifled the Northwestern offense on Saturday evening to propel them to a 17-9 victory over the Wildcats.

The Cornhusker defense racked up eight sacks and 13 tackles for loss against Northwestern. How did Rhule think his defensive unit created opportunities for his offense on Saturday? “Well, I mean, obviously, the short field, which we capitalized on, the option pass back to Malachi [Coleman]. Coach [Tom] Osborne came in this week…Coach Osborne drew that up for us one more time. And I turned and pointed to his box. It was…it was pretty cool. But the defense, they hung in there. What I was proud of is the early adversity, the turnovers. The defense just kept playing,” Rhule began.

Next week, Nebraska will face off against the Purdue Boilermakers. That one is on October 28th. Kick time is slated for 3:30 PM EST.
