During their 38-17 win over North Dakota on Saturday, Nebraska quarterback Casey Thompson took a hit to his chin that he felt was targeting. Thompson took a big hit from North Dakota’s Craig Orlando that was reviewed during the game for targeting, but was not ruled that way. As he described the hit, Orlando’s helmet hit Thompson right on the chin — although the play was not ruled targeting or any form of penalty.

Thompson made it clear that their first win of the season came at a pretty physical cost for him, as the first thing he spoke about during his postgame press appearance was the soreness he felt.

“I took a lot of hits. Just sore, but I feel good,” said Thompson. “I actually was struggling this week with a little cold or some type of little sickness throughout the week. Today I woke up on game day and it kinda all went away. You know, when the game starts you feel fine. So I felt good during the game but like I said, I’m definitely sore right after so I’ll be sore tomorrow.”

As he continued to field questions about the game, Thompson was asked about the hit he took that was reviewed for targeting and overturned. According to the star transfer from Texas, the hit came directly from Orlando’s helmet and he was surprised to see it overturned after review.

“I took a hit right to my chin. I thought it should have been targeting for sure. He literally hit me right on my chin strap, so good thing I had the chin strap or I probably would have had a broken jaw. But yeah, my jaw and my chin’s sore right now. I thought it was gonna be a targeting call — they overturned it. I took a hit to the jaw for sure on that.”
